When Gu Yin returned to the yard, there was only one oil lamp left in the room, and Wu Qingyi had already gone to bed to rest.

The room was quiet, so she lightly went to the clean room to bathe, and as soon as she got on the bed, she fell into a warm and familiar embrace. 

“You haven’t slept yet?” Gu Yin smiled awkwardly and found a comfortable position in his arms, “Aren’t you tired during the day?” 

“Not tired,” Wu Qingyi picked up her hair, playing with it between his fingertips in a circular motion. He explained, “There was nothing to do during the day. When I took leave with His Majesty before our marriage, I recommended two lieutenants. They are brave, loyal, and also His Majesty’s right-hand men. Since I’ve been home, they’ve taken over the military affairs.”

He spoke casually, as if discussing daily matters, but Gu Yin could discern deeper implications. At the inception of the new dynasty, Wu Qingyi was responsible for the imperial guards and the capital’s garrison. Later, he relinquished one of these roles, and now, he recommended two lieutenants who had earned His Majesty’s trust to share the military responsibilities. It was akin to voluntarily surrendering a significant portion of his authority.

Gu Yin had only witnessed such courage in him — someone who didn’t covet power and willingly stepped back.

Seeing Gu Yin fall silent, Wu Qingyi knew she had caught on to his intentions. He said, “Isn’t this for the best? In the past, the army was short on manpower, and I could only rest once every ten days. Now, with the two lieutenants, they can handle it. I can be like you, just checking in every day, taking a break whenever I want, and spending more time with you.”

As he spoke, he leaned in and kissed Gu Yin’s earlobe. Gu Yin’s ears were particularly sensitive, and though she used to find prolonged touching uncomfortable, her body now softened, and major military matters ceased to occupy her thoughts.

Sensing his increasingly erratic breathing, Gu Yin placed her hands on his chest and softly pleaded, “I’m not feeling well.”

She asked, “But do I have to take medicine again?” 

He opened the dark compartment on the bed and retrieved a small porcelain bottle.

He had intentionally avoided mentioning this, but as soon as Gu Yin brought it up, he grew increasingly awkward.

The old doctor’s self-made wound medicine proved highly effective. After taking it and a short nap, the next day brought relief, with only some lingering soreness in the waist and knees.

Moreover, Wu Qingyi never allowed Gu Yin to administer the medicine herself, claiming she couldn’t see the affected area and control the dosage. His rough fingers expertly prepared the cool medicine, exhibiting a level of precision even beyond when Gu Yin applied sunburn ointment. Eventually, Gu Yin couldn’t resist and pleaded in a low voice to conclude the process.

“No, I really can’t endure it,” Gu Yin begged for mercy softly.

Wu Qingyi ceased his actions, merely saying in a hoarse voice, “Okay, then you go to bed first. I’ll take a cold shower. Well, I’m used to it anyway. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve washed it before.”

The tone was despondent and pitiful. When he rose from the bed, he appeared disheartened, turning his head three times with each step, resembling a scolded husband. Gu Yin relented due to her soft-hearted nature, finding close contact with the person she loved far from resentful. After hesitating for a while, she spoke when Wu Qingyi reached the door, “What if we don’t rush? But let me clarify in advance, I have to work as usual tomorrow, and I can’t stay up until dawn with you.”

Wu Qingyi had been waiting for her to speak and promptly turned around at her words. His fiery demeanor was covered in an instant.

In the end, Gu Yin naturally didn’t stay up until dawn with him. Just before she fell asleep, Wu Qingyi mentioned it wasn’t an issue, as he could manage on his own.

As Gu Yin playfully nibbled on his arm, she drifted into sleep amidst the gentle turbulence.

Playing like this every night, Gu Yin felt like a diligent modern worker putting in 996 overtime hours each day, hoping that Wu Qingyi’s passion would wane soon so she could take a break.

Perhaps she had been too fervent in her wish. When the fragrance of sweet osmanthus permeated the air in August, she caught a whiff and vomited violently.

The long-awaited “break” had finally arrived!

In all fairness, Gu Yin was not in a hurry to add a child.

Time was on their side, so there was no need to rush things.

However, after being diagnosed with pregnancy in August, Mrs. Wang privately advised her that the first three months were crucial, and she must be cautious and avoid any disturbances.

The subject of this caution was, of course, related to their intimate moments.

The old doctor had advised her to refrain from certain activities for the first two months of pregnancy.

Upon hearing Mrs. Wang’s guidance, Gu Yin breathed a sigh of relief, albeit feeling a bit bashful.

Later, when the family returned and gathered for dinner, Mrs. Wang announced the joyous news.

Upon hearing the announcement, Wu Qingyi was momentarily stunned. The corners of his lips raised slightly, but he showed no further reaction.

The happiest were undoubtedly the two children, Gu Ye and Wu,an, who cheered in unison.

Gu Ye was the most exaggerated. He put down his bowl and jumped directly off the chair, running to Gu Yin’s side. He dared not touch her, only circled around her several times.
