Everyone was discussing the incident near Feng Yuan.

Upon Wu Qingyi’s return to his mansion, Mrs. Wang, along with the Ge family, had already taken Ge Zhu inside. The mansion’s physician came to see her, while Gu Yin awaited Wu Qingyi at the entrance.

“Everything went well?” Gu Yin inquired.

Wu Qingyi nodded and replied, “My subordinate performed exceptionally well. I’ve instructed him to escape and return later.” 

Gu Yin nodded and assessed him from head to toe.

Despite his victory in the physical altercation with Feng Yuan, the evidence on his clothes was impossible to ignore.

Gu Yin glared at him and asked, “Why did you engage in physical combat when you could have simply picked someone up and left?”

With his far superior martial arts skills compared to Feng Yuan, who was nearly middle-aged, Wu Qingyi could have easily avoided confrontation.

Wu Qingyi didn’t hide anything and explained softly as they walked toward the mansion, “I just couldn’t bear it. While we’ve had surface-level conflicts in the past, he’s a comrade in arms, and I’ve respected him to some extent. I didn’t want to cause excessive trouble for him. However, I didn’t expect him to involve his mother in a physical confrontation with his wife, justifying it by claiming his mother’s childbirth as an act of kindness… Don’t you find that absurd? His mother gave birth to him, not his wife. Why should she bear the debt of childbirth on his behalf? Such a person is unsuitable.”

This perspective was quite unique for that era, and Gu Yin laughed upon hearing it. She turned to Wu Qingyi and asked, “If I ever have conflicts with my mother, how would you mediate?”

Wu Qingyi had never considered such a scenario. He had recently observed that his mother treated Gu Yin like a daughter and insisted on taking her everywhere.

The two coincidentally reached the main courtyard, where Mrs. Wang had already requested assistance from the Ge family to help Ge Zhu settle in. Seeing them, Mrs. Wang waved and said, “Da Ya, come over and rest. You’ve been busy for a long time. Why wait for him at the door? What’s the matter? The eldest son is tall and capable. Do you really need to worry about him?”

Wu Qingyi smiled wryly at Gu Yin and whispered, “This is my mother. She treats me as if I’m the son-in-law. Let’s hope she doesn’t come to argue with me because of you.”

Gu Yin playfully swatted him and said, “Don’t talk nonsense. If Mother hears that, you’ll be in trouble!”

Wu Qingyi joined in the laughter. He considered himself much luckier than Feng Yuan. While Feng Yuan had a good wife, Wu Qingyi had the advantage of belonging to such a wonderful family. There had never been any major issues at home, providing him with a peaceful haven where he could always find solace.

Observing Mrs.Wang whispering to Gu Yin, Wu Qingyi quickly approached them and declared, “I’m hungry.”

Mrs. Wang explained that if he was hungry, he only needed to order a meal. Their household had changed, and he could have rice, noodles, or anything else he desired.

However, after contemplating it, Mrs. Wang added, “What would you like to eat?”

Wu Qingyi replied that anything would suffice.

Rolling up her sleeves with a smile, Mrs. Wang said, “In that case, I’ll go prepare a meal for you.”

While it had been some time since Mrs. Wang last cooked, Wu Qingyi had spent the first seventeen or eighteen years of his life savoring the meals she prepared. During his time in the army, he had observed that many struggled with the bland and greasy army rations. But to Wu Qingyi and his father, Wu Zhong, everything they ate tasted delightful.

However, Wu Qingyi’s smile faded as he contemplated. “I’m not that hungry, actually. I suddenly remembered some official matters I need to attend to, so I’ll head to the study to address them.”
