Aria's Tales - 1.8
Shen Yan had not woken up from his stupor for a long time. He had heard “My Identity” a couple tens of times already. He had thought that he was prepared enough for the live version. Who would have thought Mingyan’s skill was beyond his expectation? She was just casually singing while wearing a light pink shirt and the same blue short she had tried to wear on their first date. Her hair was let down, and in the background, the sun shined on her. Shen Yan felt like he was in a concert but the scene in front of him contradicted it greatly.
And Mingyan’s voice was, in one word, ethereal. He’d love to listen to her sing for a whole day, and he bet he wouldn’t get bored. He wanted all of her to himself, but he found that Mingyan had already uploaded her post, splashing him in cold water. He woke up from his dark thoughts. It was fine if he can’t have all of Gu Mingyan, but he’ll make sure to make her his Madame Shen. Shen Yan narrowed his eyes in thought.
The oblivious Mingyan happily closed the laptop. She had no desire to see if her post did get the attention of the patrolling netizens.
Right then, her phone rang. She picked it up without looking who it was. “Hello?”
“How’s my cousin?” The male voice on the other side asked in a gentle tone.
“Cousin Lu Feng?” Mingyan asked slightly surprised. She was curious why he had called her.
Lu Feng, who was currently standing near the floor-to-ceiling window in his office, let out a soft laugh that scared the rigidly standing secretary behind him. The poor secretary immediately chanted “don’t think about it” continuously in his mind.
Lately, the boss had been wearing a demonic face since one of his family member was said to be shot. So although he was surprised that his demonic face finally softened, he was scared to show it on his face.
Lu Feng’s face turned serious. “How is your wound?”
“It scarred.” Mingyan simply summarized. Her wound had finally closed, and the only thing that was left was a white mark that reminded her of that traumatizing event. She lazily leaned her side to Shen Yan’s with a thump while holding her phone.
Lu Feng’s demonic face came again and the secretary behind him was almost in tears. Then, after a while Lu Feng’s face softened again, making his secretary speechless. Boss, is it the time of the month? Why are you having mood swings??
“I’ll send you some ointments. Be sure to use them, alright?”
Mingyan shook her head and hummed in refusal. “Hmm, Yan gege gave me some.”
Something snapped in Lu Feng’s mind and he cursed at that dreadful name. So it was true. That bastard was actually staying with his adorable cousin! Should he send his secret forces to guard his cousin Mingyan?
Shen Yan gently took Mingyan’s phone from her hand. “I’ll take care of her,” with that, he hung up. Mingyan blinked her bewildered eyes but didn’t say anything. Then her phone rang again, so she took it back.
“Hello?” Again, she forgot to look at the recipient and thought it was Lu Feng.
But it was a female voice this time.”Miss Gu, my name is Xiao Xi. I will be your manager starting today.”
“Xiao Xi?” Mingyan was surprised. From what she could gather from Mingyan’s memories, Xiao Xi was the manager of the now-retired top female singer in China, Douxin.
“Yes, Miss Gu.” Xiao Xi’s voice was very respectful. “Boss Lu had asked me to take care of you, although he did say not to mind your familial relationship so I’ll be treating you as how I treated Douxin.” Xiao Xi was an expert in her field. She had wanted to refuse in taking in this new artist because of her background, but “My Identity” had shut her up. The girl didn’t need underhanded methods to be popular. Her voice was enough.
Mingyan: Boss Lu? Lu Feng? It couldn’t be .. right?
Lily: Want me to investigate?
Mingyan: Yes, please ~
“Please take care of me then, Sis Xi ~”
Xiao Xi, on the other side, felt her ears heating up. It seems her new artist was a bit … naughty. But it didn’t seem like she did it deliberately, so Xiao Xi could only think that Mingyan’s voice was just naturally cute and, well, a bit seductive. She let her continue calling her as so.
Xiao Xi coughed. “I’ve already booked your schedule for tomorrow and the day after that. Tomorrow you have a live performance at a radio station for “My Identity” and a singing competition in a television show for rookies a day after. Shall I pick you up or are you coming to the station tomorrow by yourself?”
Mingyan didn’t answer right away but turned to Shen Yan instead. Her eyes asking if he could drive her to the station tomorrow. Shen Yan had a troubled look before shaking his head. Mingyan nodded in understanding.
“Sis Xi, please pick me up. I’ll text you my address later.”
Xiao Xi immediately affirmed and politely ended the call. She was not strong enough to hear her name being called so sweetly for the third time.
Mingyan excitedly looked at Shen Yan. “Come watch me sing two days from now?” She wanted to dedicate her first live performance on stage to him.
Shen Yan’s troubled face resurfaced. He had an appointment with Mingyan’s parents that day. What to do? He couldn’t possibly postpone it or else they’ll never accept him as their son-in-law. And he couldn’t say this to Mingyan as well. He wanted to surprise her.
“I have an important business that day.” Shen Yan carefully said as he observed Mingyan’s face that changed into disappointment.
He immediately tried to hug her in hopes to compensate his mistake, but Mingyan dodged. She hugged a pillow and looked outside the window instead. What’s so important that he couldn’t come to her first live? It was supposed to be a memorable event.
Lily, who was nonchalantly watching her master act, was stupefied. ‘Ey, what happened? Why are you so upset?’ No one knew her master’s true emotions better than her. After all, their souls were practically moulded together.
‘Hmmph! He won’t come to my live! I’m pissed!’ Mingyan pressed her lips together. She didn’t understand why she was so affected that she couldn’t almost control her emotions.
Lily was speechless. Her master was throwing a tantrum? And all because this guy wouldn’t come to her performance? What did she miss?
Shen Yan felt incredibly helpless. That day, Mingyan completely ignored him. Until evening came, he was unsuccessful in getting her attention.
Lily: Master~ Stop bullying Shen Yan already *exasperated*
Mingyan stood in front of the guestroom that Shen Yan was staying on. She decisively knocked on the door and didn’t listen to Lily’s words.
The door opened to reveal Shen Yan in his white shirt and black and white striped pyjamas. He was still not asleep even though it was already 10 in the evening.
Shen Yan saw Mingyan holding a teddy bear in her hand while wearing a white large shirt. All he could see was her legs, which made him hope that she was at least wearing shorts underneath. “What’s wro-“
Mingyan strode inside and buried herself on his bed, and covered herself with the blanket until only her head could be seen. Her actions indicated that she refused to leave.
Shen Yan speechlessly stood near the door. He was not perfect. If he really slept beside her then he wasn’t confident that he could control himself. So he turned to the door, deciding to leave.
“Where are you going?” Mingyan asked and pouted. She had no plans, whatsoever, to let him go. “You won’t come to my live and now you won’t even let me sleep with you?” She murmured while slightly pulling the blanket to cover half her face.
Shen Yan was immediately defeated. Okay, he can sacrifice his sleep for today if it makes her happy. He closed the door and went to sleep by her side. Mingyan’s aggrieved face finally softened. She moved over to clutch his shirt in her hand while still hugging her teddy bear. As she said, she wasn’t going to let him go.
Shen Yan helplessly laid down. After a while, Mingyan finally entered a deep sleep, and he tried to pry her hands. But it wouldn’t budge. It seems he really couldn’t escape his fate.
He really wasn’t able to sleep properly that night. And by the time morning came, Shen Yan had pulled Mingyan to his embrace while the girl instinctively let go of her teddy bear and hugged him instead. His sleepiness was quickly washed away. Sacrificing his sleep was worth the hug.
Mingyan woke up in Shen Yan’s arms and blushed furiously. How did she end up in his chest?! She ran away with her teddy bear back to her room and patted her face and chest to calm herself. Not good, she must stay calm even in a situation like this. They do say that practice makes perfect. So she’ll just start sleeping in his room again starting tomorrow ~
Lily: What a horrible excuse to take advantage of someone *sweat*
Mingyan: Teehee~!
Mingyan was finally in a good mood. She made breakfast for the two of them and sent the sleepless Shen Yan to work with a bright smile plastered at her face. Shen Yan who saw her smiling while waving goodbye once again thought that his sleep was sacrificed justifiedly.
In Mingyan’s house, there was a studio with all kinds of musical instruments and recording equipment. Her manager had sent an email with her schedule for the month and found that the radio station performance was at 4:00 p.m. so she decided to practice for the time being.
She sang “My Identity” a couple of times and memorized the lyrics to heart. Then she tried to make her own rendition along with the rap. She felt that her rap wasn’t excellent but it was enough to be above average.
Then, she decided to sing a Chinese version of “Say Something” by A Great Big World in her competition. She discussed this with her new manager and got her approval before she practiced the song.
By the time she was ready, wearing a white baggy overall that had an off-shoulder top and an ankle length lace-up heeled boots, Xiao Xi reached her house and rang the doorbell.
She saw her outfit and nodded her head in approval. It seemed like she didn’t have to worry about her artist’s sense of fashion. She also approved the fact that Mingyan wasn’t the peerless beauty that could take down countries. Those beauties, though she didn’t want to be rude, was just too troublesome.
“Hello, Sis Xi!” Mingyan’s emotionless face was switched on again. But Xiao Xi actually found that it was worse – an emotionless cute face paired with a cute and slightly seductive voice. Her heart was beating so fast that she suddenly wondered her sexual preference.
“You have a good sense in fashion! Are you ready?” Xiao Xi was still a professional. She stopped herself from blushing and nodded sternly.
“Yes.” Mingyan sent a text to Shen Yan saying that she was heading to the radio station. Although she was still disappointed that he wasn’t going to come tomorrow, she didn’t hold a grudge. She just hoped that at her first concert, he would be there.
Xiao Xi drove to the radio station and led Mingyan to her own waiting room. She ordered the stylist that she brought to give Mingyan a natural makeup and waited for their turn.
Meanwhile, in another room. Sam was leisurely sitting on a couch near a window. His phone was currently connected to the radio that he was supposed to appear about thirty minutes later.
“Sam are you sure about this?” His manager, the same person who went together with him in recording “My Identity”, asked worriedly.
“Shut up, Claude.” He reprimanded coldly which made Claude stiffen. Claude could only sigh. That poor girl, why did she have to attract this brat’s interest?
Sam had a plan. He thought it was brilliant, but Claude thought it was stupid. If he wanted to get a girl’s heart, it was definitely not by boycotting from their live performance! That girl looked like her pride was embedded in her bones. She would never come to beg Sam to come to the live no matter what.
