Aria's Tales - 1.1
*DNA intro (by BTS) blasts in the background*
Aria was startled awake by a phone ringing. She silently scanned the room and found that she was alone. The phone in her hand stubbornly rang, repeating the ringtone over and over again- it was the intro to DNA by BTS. The name on the screen was Chen Rui. Aria stared blankly, having no intention to answer it. At last, the caller gave up and sent her a message instead. “Miss Gu Mingyan, please come to the front building of Brilliant Stars by 7:00 p.m.”
“Wow, watta bitch!” A sweet voice complained from her right side. Aria moved her gaze to the leisurely sitting small white stuffed rabbit on her right shoulder, wearing a pink dress and purple blazer. The rabbit looked at her. “Aria be careful! That girl’s a white lotus!” She warned indignantly.
Aria blinked once and smiled slightly. “Give me the information Lily.”
Lily, the rabbit, nodded with her fluffy ears bouncing back and forth. Then, she clapped with her paws, making a soft thump sound, and a bright dot emerged. It swiftly stirred towards Aria’s forehead and numerous moving images quickly played in her head.
The original owner of her new body is called Gu Mingyan.
Gu Mingyan was an orphan who lived with an abusive adoptive mother, a heartless adoptive father, and a two-faced younger step-sister. She lived the sixteen years of her life in hell and was traumatized to the point that she lost her voice and her ability to express emotions. During this part of her life, Shen Yan was the only person who made her see the colourful side of the world. Shen Yan had his own flaw, too. He was blind. But despite his disability, he was very popular in school.
When Gu Mingyan’s biological mother found her, she was reluctant to leave. She didn’t want to leave the only person who could move her. But in the end, she left, hoping to bring back what she had once lost so that when they meet once again, she would sing him a song.
It’s been three years since then, and she improved by leaps and bounds. Now she is facing a turning point in her life.
There is an audition ongoing and Gu Mingyan is the fifty-seventh participant out of the eighty who applied. The audition is held by one of the most influential entertainment company called, Brilliant Stars. She is supposed to wait in this room, and she will be called a few minutes before she goes on stage led by a staff.
There were three knocks on the door before Aria could process Gu Mingyan’s fate in this world. Aria got up and walked over to the dresser with a large mirror on the wall. Gu Mingyan had a small nose and a small mouth coupled with two big sparkling eyes. She looked so cute that Aria would love to pinch those squishy looking cheeks if only they weren’t hers. Her hair and eyes were both hazel, and her skin was fair.
Another three knocks echoed in the room. Aria stopped herself from her narcissistic thoughts and closed her eyes.
I am Gu Mingyan.
When she opened them, they became indifferent. Even Lily, despite how many times she had seen Aria’s taking over of the original’s character, couldn’t help but be amazed at her high-class acting.
Aria, now Gu Mingyan, went to open the door and an irritated staff greeted her. “You’re next.” She humphed and turned without even bothering to show Mingyan the way.
Mingyan’s face didn’t change in the slightest. She had always been looking over everything indifferently, reacting minimally, and only speaking short sentences. Although her voice was back, her ability to express emotions was not.
Lily had long poofed out of sight. Without waiting for Mingyan’s order, she had already shown the map towards the backstage. Mingyan kissed her in her mind as thanks and proceeded to the backstage.
When she arrived, she was immediately called to go up on stage. The staff who called her earlier saw that the wench actually arrived on time and got even more irritated. But she couldn’t do anything at the moment since the other was going to perform soon. A mocking laugh escaped her lips, not only her but almost everyone in the backstage and the audiences had on mocking eyes.
Mingyan ignored their mocking eyes and stood firm at the center of the stage. A mike stood together with her with just the right height.
There were about seven judges, all of whom are responsible for the musician part of the entertainment in Brilliant Stars. The most prominent among them was Hui Mengli – a worldwide known songwriter.
Mingyan was observing the judges while they did the same. She said no superfluous words and waited for her song to begin.
After a few seconds of silence, the lights dimmed and an upbeat instrumental mixed with a bit of slow electro music, filled the hall.
“Found you when your heart was broke,
I filled your cup until it overflowed,”
It was as if Mingyan was wearing a glass mask earlier and as soon as the song started, it shattered. Her icy demeanour was no longer there, but instead, a bit of anger and sadness gradually took over.
“Took it so far to keep you close,
I was afraid to leave you on your own,
I said I’d catch you if you fall,
and if they laugh then fuck them all,
and then I got you off your knees,
put you right back on your feet,
just so you could take advantage of me,”
The dimmed lights suddenly changed colours, and they pulsed together with the song’s rhythm. Mingyan had long held the mic with both hands. Her eyes looked lost and glazed.
“Tell me how does it feel sittin’ up there,
Feeling so high but too far away to hold me,
You know I’m the one who puts you up there,
maybe the sky doesn’t ever get lonely,”
Her voice took over everything in the room. Everyone was stunned, especially the judges. The audition had been going on since early in the morning, and so far the judges were not even a bit satisfied. It was now 6:00 in the evening, and they had almost lost hope looking for a new star. Who would have thought they’d be slapped awake by this girl?
Hui Mengli sat up straight and listened intently. A smile finally graced his emotionless face and a shocking yet firm prophecy escaped his lips, “she’s going to be a star.”
“Thinking you could live without me,
Thinking you could live without me,
Baby, I’m the one who put you up there,
I don’t know why,”
Mingyan slowly opened her eyes just as the song faded to the background. Her eyes were still misty but her strained expression gradually calmed down. The room was incredibly quiet to the point that the people sitting or standing side by side could hear each other’s breathing. Seeing that there were no reactions, Mingyan indifferently turned to leave.
“Wait!” Hui Mengli abruptly got up from his seat, startling the people by his side and the audience, awake. He then turned to his assistant who was standing near the wall. “Quick get me the contract!” The way he spoke was so fast, as if afraid that Mingyan would escape.
His order made his assistant and the people who heard him once again stunned. What? Isn’t it just the first selection? They haven’t even reached the special talents portion yet! The audience thought so, but the judges and the assistant understood. This was a potential star! To heck with special talents! As long as she sings, she’d be raking money endlessly!
The assistant immediately ran to get the papers while the judges asked Mingyan to wait in the room she was in before. They then announced to the audience that the audition was over, causing some of them to curse since most of the audience were participants who had finished singing.
While Mingyan headed back to the previous room, she passed by a pale-faced girl who looked at her in horror. It was the staff who called her earlier. She retrieved her gaze indifferently, choosing to put down her grudges as the girl was a bit cute. Besides, the girl had only been looking down on her that’s all. Pretty harmless, yeah?
It seemed the girl didn’t think Mingyan would just let her go like that because her eyes shined in gratitude. Thank you, big sis! I’m sorry big sis! She slapped her mouth for being too disrespectful.
Mingyan sat down on the sofa in the room. She decided to check Gu Mingyan’s fate while she waited since she wasn’t able to do so earlier.
After Gu Mingyan won the audition by a landslide, she went to the front of Brilliant Stars according to Chen Rui’s instruction. And when she did, she saw two girls – one staring maliciously at the other while the other looking pitiful with her tears, standing across each other. It was Chen Rui and Yang Xi.
Yang Xi was Gu Mingyan’s friend and her cousin’s fiance. While Chen Rui was her acquaintance during high school.
The girl with the murderous aura was Yang Xi, who held a gun with her trembling arms.
It seemed their rivalry in catching her cousin’s heart had reached the point that only one of them could remain alive. Yes, this was a cliche love triangle between the female fiance, the heir, and the heir’s fancied girl.
Gu Mingyan was just a cannon fodder in their story who unluckily got caught in their crossfire. Literally.
When Chen Rui saw Gu Mingyan, she bolted to her with a face looking at her only saviour. And Yang Xi, who had long lost her sanity, did not notice Chen Rui’s plan and pulled the trigger. Yang Xi’s target was Chen Rui, but Chen Rui had pulled Gu Mingyan to take the bullet.
Mingyan was thoroughly speechless. This kind of outcome for the owner really was unfair. Gu Mingyan did not do anything at all. She didn’t deserve to die just because of their stupid proclamation of love!
Mingyan massaged the bridge of her nose in contemplation. It seemed she had transmigrated right before the owner’s death. Now she had to face such a stupid scenario.
“Aria, what are you going to do~?” Lily reappeared sitting on her lap.
“Call me Mingyan. I’m Mingyan now.” She stroke Lily’s head and scratched below her head, making Lily purr.
“Nn! Mingyan, what to d- hahaha!” Lily tried to slap the dangerous hand when it suddenly tickled her. But she was just a stuffed toy so she could only helplessly let it continue.
“Hmm,” Mingyan thought for a bit. “If I don’t rip Chen Rui’s facade, she’ll become my cousin-in-law. Let’s follow the story for now. But ~” She finally stopped tickling Lily, much to the poor rabbit’s relief.
She dialled his cousin’s number and waited for the other to pick up, which didn’t take thirty seconds for him to do so.
“Mingyan, what’s wrong?” On the other side of the line, a man with medium length hair leaned on the balcony of a grand restaurant. He had on a genuinely worried expression as he asked his cousin her reason for calling.
His cousin rarely ever spoke to him or even towards Auntie Chang, her mother. The girl had been traumatized deeply that when she came back to the family three years ago, she had no life in her eyes. He couldn’t help but be worried whenever she called.
“Lu Feng.” Mingyan’s face had long resorted back to being emotionless, while Lily stuck her face unto the back of her hand that was holding the phone. She paused, unsure if she would really say it.
Lu Feng’s expression softened. “I told you, you can just call me Feng. What’s up?”
Mingyan couldn’t help but act out of character and smile. Lu Feng is the heir to one of the most prestigious business companies in China. Although he wore a nonchalant and cold look in public, he was more warm towards family members.
“Can you – um, pick me up?” She was a bit guilty about deceiving him. But that guilt soon flew out the window when she remembered why she had died.
Lu Feng was surprised at her request. Was she finally opening up? It would be great if that was so. “Got it. Wait for me, I’ll be there right now.” He decided while totally ignoring the fact that he was in a business meeting regarding a $10 million contract.
“Okay, I’m at Brilliant Stars.” Mingyan let her head rest on her palm. Her eyes glinted playfully when she thought of the events in the future.
“This will be fun.”
