The Imaginary God - Chapter 4
A little over three weeks had passed since Lugo had left the crater. The rations he made from the snake he killed in the beginning had run completely out.
The reason why he was still okay after running out of food to eat was because he simply did not run out of monsters to hunt! After the rations ran out and the results of his scavenging missions were less than satisfactory, he finally decided to hunt down animals.
To his shock and surprise, Lugo discovered that most of the creatures in the Lugo Forest were monsters. Though many were definitely weaker than the Freescale Serpents, there were some much stronger than those snakes as well.
He spent most of his time hunting small critters and eating random plants because of this.
Although it was not all bad. Thanks to him eating almost any random plant that he believed were not poisonous, he discovered many strange and interesting vegetation in the forest.
While most were just normal flowers, he did also find spices that could develop of flavor of any animals he caught.
After hunting an unknown amount of creature, Lugo actually leveled up twice over those three weeks. He was now level 4 and he had saved up 15 status points!
Even though it did not seem like a lot of points,he could increase all of his stats up by 2 at the very least. What was most important about his increase in levels was not the status points however.
The best thing about it was a new ability he obtained.
Originally he could only get information about plants and animals if he ate the flesh of an animal or any vegetation growing around. But now it was different.
He just had to touch plants to get some basic information on them now. And as for animals, he just needed to eat something that came from them. Whether it was hair, blood, or even… droppings…
Of course he had never eaten the dropping though! Actually if he dried a creature’s waste and used it as fuel for a fire to cook something, then it counted as “eating” the droppings as well.
The notification boxes even gave him images of the monsters he would gain information of as well. All in all, it was very convenient.
He had tried to eat some of his own hair at one point to see if he could learn anything about himself, but to no avail. This didn’t discourage him at all however.
If he had to complain about anything, there were only two things that really bothered him.
One was that the information he received about the creatures was incomplete. It seemed that if he was stronger than the monster then he would receive as much information as he needed.
But if he was seemingly weaker, then the knowledge he would obtain was limited.
Which seemed a bit suspicious to him as he felt that monsters that were definitely weaker than him had some info about them restricted.
Maybe the notification boxes judged strength differently than he did?
Although it seemed a bit cheap, he thought that the trade was pretty fair overall.
But the second thing was a weird one. During his fight with the Freescale Serpent, a notification popped up that stated that he gained a skill. Yet he could not figure out how to use the skill or where to even see his skill list!
Lugo assumed that it would be unlocked after reaching a certain level, but who knew what level that was.
He ignored it for the moment and just focused on other things.
Like how at the moment he was currently taking apart the body of a monster. He was not the one who killed it and most l of its meat was eaten, but he could still find some use for the bones.
Using all of his strength, Lugo struggled to pull out the second fibula of the large corpse. The bone was the length of one of his arms and the corpse was several times larger than he was.
Lugo was very happy with what he obtained though. For the last few weeks, he had been using the bone from the serpent that he had killed all those days ago. The tip of the bone was sharpened and it was tied to the first fibula bone he got from the corpse he was picking apart.
Using what was left of his shirt, he quickly tied the three skeletal pieces together and tightened them as much as he could. And with that, a makeshift spear was made. Even though it was not the most stable weapon, Lugo knew that it would probably last him a good bit of time.
After all, he discovered that he was a master of tying knots!
Spear in hand, he started to casually walk along a random direction again since there really was nothing else to do.
However, he did not walk very far before facing some trouble up ahead. Quickly pressing himself up behind a large tree, Lugo slowly popped his head out to watch the scene of what was happening in front of him.
It was a cute little bunny with large floppy ears and a puffy tail. Its snow white fur stood straight up and blew along with the wind. The tiny creature had beady red eyes and adorable little claws.
Lugo was ruthless in his actions against most monsters and animals, but he did have a certain weakness. It was that he adored cute things!
He could not help this side of him. Every time an adorable creature would pop out of the forest, he would purposefully ignore it and let it go on its merry way. Of course if it decided to attack him instead then he would not even hesitate in ending the creature’s life.
But usually they avoided him as much as he avoided them, so it was all good.
Although, this bunny was a bit different. This was because it was the cutest thing he had seen yet.
He just wanted to hug it and pet its soft looking fur. Looking at how puffy the bunny was, he imagined that petting it probably felt like touching a living cloud.
Looking at the bunny, Lugo could tell that this creature was not as strong as he was. He was confident that he could kill it even with no weapon in hand. Yet he still chose not to leave his hiding spot.
This was because of one simple thing. The large red stain covering the bunny’s back. Looking down at it, he could tell that the creature had been attacked by something dangerous.
“Although that dangerous thing had yet to appear…”
As soon as that thought crossed his mind, the ground beneath him rumbled as a large claw stepped out from behind the brushes. Soon a head and then a body followed out after the claw and the beast before him was finally revealed.
Lugo felt a shiver run down his spine when he saw the monster.
It was not that big compared to other monsters, but it was still something to be reckoned with.
In fact it was probably a bit larger than twice his size if it stood on its hind legs, but the pressure it gave off was domineering. Its golden fur and the large mane that surrounded its head made it look even more intimidating than it already was.
Blood red lines ran over its entire body and its scarlet eyes made it look like a creature that was constantly berserk.
The claws of the beast dug deep into the hard ground and it released a roar so loud that Lugo felt as if he was about to go deaf.
The monster released a snarl at the bunny that was facing it and began to walk toward the creature slowly. Its tail wagged out behind it. Oddly enough, the tail of the creature was very short. Its appearance looked more like a fleshy stump than a fearsome beast’s tail.
Meanwhile Lugo stood there frozen in shock and surprise. This was not because he was afraid of the monster, actually it was the exact opposite. He was extremely excited!
It was a very silly type of creature. Because of its prideful nature, the beast would fight with anyone who got in its way even if it knew it was weaker. Its bravery and ferocity made it a dangerous opponent for most people, and even some decently strong beasts would avoid it.
But not Lugo. This lion was something he felt nothing more than excitement for. This was because a while back he had fought this very same beast. While most creatures of the same species all looked the same to him, his eyes were still able to notice some small details in some monster’s appearances.
There were some areas of the lion’s body where it was missing some fur. These were the exact same places he had used the serpent bone to stab him so long ago. There was also a scar over its left eye that he had caused, and most telling of all was the tail.
At that time he was still only at level two and as such stood no chance against the beast. So after fighting for a bit, he decided to act quickly and ran away with all of his might.
At the same time though, he was able to slice the monster’s tail off and even cooked it up for supper later that same day. As such he did get some interesting info on the lion.
And the notification boxes must have felt sorry for him because they even gave him some of the monster’s attack patterns! As such he was now fully confident in being able to stand his ground if faced with the lion again.
This was especially true now that he had leveled up twice since then! While he still chose to not use the status points he had saved up, the increase in his stats from leveling up did give him some form of confidence.
Raising up the spear he held in his hand, Lugo looked back to the vain lion in front of him. Killing intent began to build up as he gave off a sinister smile.
If anyone was watching him at that moment then they might’ve backed away and tried to avoid him at all costs, luckily no one was there though.
The vain lion was a strong monster. So strong in fact that Lugo knew one thing for certain. If he could beat it right here and now, then he would definitely level up to level five.
That was one of the reasons he wanted to fight the lion. The other reasons were that he wanted to test out his own strength and… it tasted REALLY good!
Just the tail made Lugo exclaim in delight from one bite. And after he finished eating it, he went into a semi-depressed state. But now that he had the chance to eat the whole body, he could not help but feel his mouth started to water.
Although the vain lion was quite powerful, it was not the worst thing in the forest. He had come to witness monsters far beyond anything he could possibly imagine.
Creatures so big that the ground would tremble from their simple steps, monsters so evil that the feeling they gave off to all who saw them was similar to that of some sort of demon, and beasts so fearsome that even one hundred vain lions would not be a match to one of them.
All in all, the last couple of weeks have been insane and they have only served to broaden Lugo’s mind a bit more.
He watched the lion, that stood in front of the bunny with a hungry glint in its eye, raised its head up in the air and released an intense roar and pounced over to the bunny.
And at that exact moment, Lugo charged in spear in hand toward the oversized cat and gave off a shout.
Both creatures looked over to him in surprise and without saying a single thing, Lugo pulled his arm back and thrust the spear forward into the vain lion.
A look of shock and anger appeared in the creature’s eyes as it felt the sharpened end of the bone enter into its side. With an enraged expression on its face, the lion allowed the spear to push it to the side.
There was enough momentum in the strike that the lion flew back several meters away.
Landing on the ground, it slowly rose to its feet while trembling. Facing the familiar face in front of it, the lion felt its blood begin to boil in rage.
The enraged beast felt all of its muscles tense up while it gave off another intense roar.
With no plan in mind, the vain lion charged at Lugo with the intent of ripping his throat out.
It was not the brightest creature and as such it had no real plan in mind. All it could do was charge forward and use its overbearingly superior physical strength to overpower Lugo.
This was something he expected to happen. After all Lugo was no fool and he knew that the greatest weakness of the vain lions was their low intelligence.
A sharp glow shone deep within his eyes as he accepted the lion’s challenge and began to charge forward himself.
“You wish to challenge me in a test of strength!? Then let us see what is stronger, your body or my spear!”
Lugo gave off a thundering scream as he pointed his weapon forward and charged in. Thanks to the information he received, he knew that the lion had a fatal weakness that he could take advantage of.
Sadly, there was no way for him to attack that weakness at the moment so he made a quick decision. Fight until an opening showed.
And with that the powerful fleshy body of the lion and the thick bony spear of Lugo collided together.
