The Daily Life Of Mei Furen Doting On Her Husband - Chapter 9
Wu Zhen unfolded one and saw that it depicted a monster with a green face and fangs. “Yeah, not bad. It looks pretty fierce.”
The young boy Mei Si puffed out his chest with great pride. “This is the Green-faced Fang I drew according to the description of the Green-faced Fang in the notes. If there really is a Green-faced Fang in the world, it must look like the one in my drawing!”
Unfortunately, he didn’t look like that, Wu Zhen thought to herself, having actually seen the Green-faced Fang.
The young Mei Si loved to read unofficial histories and miscellaneous notes, especially monsters and ghosts stories, to the point of obsession. Besides Wu Zhen, the person he admired most in his life was the author of “Notes on Monsters and Ghosts”, White Snake Lang. Although he had never met the person, Mei Si always claimed that he and White Snake Lang were kindred spirits and would become close friends if they ever met.
In short, because he liked “Notes on Monsters and Ghosts” so much, Mei Si decided to draw all the monsters and ghosts described. He planned to compile his illustrations into a book and personally deliver it to White Snake Lang. While others couldn’t bear to listen to Mei Si’s incessant talk about monsters and ghosts, and his family scolded him for not focusing on more practical matters, Wu Zhen never mocked him for it.
Mei Si could talk endlessly about his interests. Wu Zhen thought she would have to listen to him ramble all afternoon, but after a while, he suddenly stopped talking. He stood up and pointed to the shore. “Ah! It’s that group of people from the Liu family!”
Wu Zhen turned her head and saw a circle of curtains under a big willow tree on the bank, with several girls sitting inside. When noblewomen went out for spring outings, they often used curtains to create a private space and avoid being disturbed.
The girls seemed to have noticed them on the boat. They gathered together, pointed at the boat, said something, and laughed together.
“They must be saying bad things about us again!” Mei Si snorted angrily and went downstairs without saying anything. Soon, their boat docked. Wu Zhen did not move, just leaned on the railing of the second floor of the boat and watched. Mei Si led the boys and girls who had been listening to the music downstairs and strode towards the curtain.
Wu Zhen knew what would happen without even watching. Sure enough, the girls inside the curtain saw that Mei Si and his group had no good intentions and stood up too. Then the two sides put their hands on their hips and started cursing at each other through the curtain. The scene was very heated.
Wu Zhen had good eyesight and could see the woman who was blocked by several girls. She sat quietly at the head of the table, looking at the willows calmly, as if she didn’t see the quarrel in front of her at all. She was very much like Wu Zhen, accustomed to such scenes.
The woman sitting next to her was Liu Taizhen, whose father was the Imperial Minister. Censor Liu was a powerful figure who gave the Emperor a headache. He was upright, and the Emperor privately described him as a stinking stone in the chamber pot. He dared to say anything and dared to argue with anyone. What was even more terrifying was that he had been the chief head of the Imperial College and had trained a group of stubborn people just like him. Now, the censors of the entire Censorate were all like him, and it was terrible to see a group of such stubborn officials walk out.
Taizhen was the beloved daughter of the terrible Censor Liu. Everyone knew that Censor Liu loved his daughter, so no one in all of Chang’an dared to mess with Liu Taizhen – except Wu Zhen.
If Wu Zhen was the leader of a group of noble and dissolute young men in Chang’an, leading them to play around, then a group of noble women headed by Liu Taizhen were models of dignity and courtesy. The two groups disliked each other, and later it evolved into a quarrel whenever they saw each other. In fact, this matter was originally very simple. A few years ago, Wu Zhen and Liu Taizhen had a quarrel and were discovered. The younger people of both sides wanted to save face for their bosses, so the quarrel escalated and became what it was today.
By now, the feud had grown bigger and scolding each other had become a habit. Even Wu Zhen’s calls to stop were useless. She could only let them scold each other as it was not a big deal anyway.
Wu Zhen looked over and suddenly raised her eyebrows upon seeing Liu Taizhen looking at her.
Amidst the verbal battle, neither side noticed that Liu Taizhen, who had been seated on the sidelines, had disappeared. She had quietly slipped away and walked behind a nearby large tree. At some point, Wu Zhen, who had originally been on the boat, joined her side.
The two legendary enemies stood side by side in an unexpectedly peaceful atmosphere.
“A dirty creature has sneaked into Chang’an City,” Liu Taizhen stated bluntly, her slightly pale face as cold as ice.
Wu Zhen replied, “What kind of dirty thing is this? How come I didn’t notice it?”
Liu Taizhen glanced at her and said unhappily, “How would you, Cat Lord, find out when you spend every day in the brothel listening to music?”
Wu Zhen placed a hand on Liu Taizhen’s shoulder and said with a smile, “Little Snake, you’re wrongly accusing me. I also visited the monster market last night and found nothing. But you— I didn’t see you or your two assistants at Yan Tower. Where did you go to play?”
“Do you think I’m like you, always thinking about playing?” Liu Taizhen’s tone was sharp, but she didn’t shake off Wu Zhen’s hand. “I took them to track down that dirty creature.”
“Oh, thank you for your hard work,” Wu Zhen replied casually. “Did you find anything?”
Liu Taizhen took a small object from her sleeve and showed it to Wu Zhen. “I didn’t find that creature, but I found this.”
Wu Zhen frowned after taking a look and cursed, “It’s this kind of evil again. It’s too troublesome.”
In Liu Taizhen’s hand was a crystal-clear stone without any impurities. In the middle of the stone was a solidified bright red dot, which looked extremely strange and intriguing. Ordinary people couldn’t discern its mystery, but to those not entirely human, it was an extremely ominous sight.
There existed a spirit in the world known as the “undead corpse”. It formed when someone died in excruciating pain and harbored immense resentment in death. While the flesh and skin decayed, the undead bones remained immortal. These immortal undead bones transformed into many crystal-clear stones, with the bright red dots representing the lingering resentment. This particular stone was known as an “undead bones”.
Undead corpses would gather these “undead bones”, filled with resentment, and give them to ordinary people. Those who wore these “undead bones” would perish within half a month.
Wu Zhen despised these malevolent spirits that derived pleasure from harming people. Many of them were transformed from deceased individuals, irrational and driven only by a desire to inflict harm. As a “Cat Lord”, it was her duty to eliminate these malevolent entities that infiltrated Chang’an City.
“I don’t know how many of these ‘undead bones’ there are. We need to find them quickly, or more people will die,” Liu Taizhen said earnestly.
