The Daily Life Of Mei Furen Doting On Her Husband - Chapter 12
Judging by Mei Zhuyu’s demeanor, it was evident he was different from her kind, likely looking down on someone like her. Hence, he would probably be unwilling to marry her.
Wu Zhen had always cherished a quiet and independent life, yet for some reason, her father and elder sister at home were always concerned about her marital status. At times, she considered the idea of marrying someone herself. After all, while most daughters worried about being mistreated, she would be the one who could potentially mistreat others. If she were unhappy, she could dismiss her partner at any time and return to live in Duke Yu’s Mansion.
She had never been interested in marriage primarily because she was lazy and had no desire to engage with a stranger. What made her refuse was the idea that if she did marry, sneaking out at night without informing her partner would become challenging.Â
It was too troublesome.
Wu Zhen just felt a headache for a moment, thinking that it was useless to waste time since she couldn’t get the undead bone, so she jumped off the table and prepared to leave first.
She quietly slipped out of the window and landed gracefully on a stone beside the pond outside. To her surprise, a few red fish darted beneath the lotus leaves and water plants that had concealed them, so she hadn’t noticed them before. The presence of these vibrant fish suddenly brought life to the green yard.
Unable to resist, she glanced back at Mei Zhuyu inside the room. He was earnestly writing the engagement letter, his demeanor solemn. Redirecting her attention, she continued stealthily along the wall.
Wu Zhen maintained her feline-like agility as she made her way to Pingkang Street. Luckily, Changle Street wasn’t far from there, and she arrived swiftly. Pingkang Street, dotted with numerous brothels, was eerily quiet during the day. The object of Wu Zhen’s search, Lady Huzhu, resided in a small yet exquisitely adorned mansion to the east of Pingkang Street.
Under Lord Mao’s authority were two notable figures: one a reckless troublemaker, the other the accomplished Lady Huzhu. She was a renowned figure in Chang’an City, particularly famous in Pingkang Street’s brothels. Known for her beauty and talent, she often inspired poets and scholars to compose verses in her honor. Wealthy young men frequently lavished her with extravagant feasts to bask in her presence.
Yet, beneath Lady Huzhu’s charming facade lay a cunning fox spirit, a fact not uncommon in tales where beautiful creatures were often rumored to be foxes. Over recent years, Wu Zhen had encountered many such fox spirits, typically attractive and alluring, and Lady Huzhu was among the most captivating. If she took a liking to a man, she would generously indulge in romance with him.
Huzhu was still catching up on her sleep when Wu Zhen leaped through her window and onto her bed. Wrapped in the quilt was a red fox with lustrous fur. Wu Zhen pounced on her and lightly stepped on her to wake her from slumber. With a blink, Huzhu transformed into a captivating beauty.
She lazily sat up, the quilt slipping down to reveal rose-red marks on her porcelain skin. Narrow, watery eyes glanced at the cat on the quilt as she grumbled in a husky voice, “Little troublemaker, I just fell asleep not long ago!”
Ignoring her complaint, Wu Zhen pressed on, “Find me some clothes. I need to discuss something with you.”
Huzhu leaned back against the soft pillows, unconcerned that her graceful form was partially exposed. With a smile, she picked up the cat and asked, “It’s been quiet lately. What’s on your mind?”
Wu Zhen raised her paw, the shiny tip of her claw extending. Huzhu’s body tensed, clutching her chest, she quickly set the cat down, pulled up the quilt, and got out of bed, saying, “Alright, alright, I’ll get it right away, little troublemaker. Why are you so impatient? You scare me sometimes.”
There were no men’s clothes in sight, only beautiful skirts. Wu Zhen disliked wearing robes because they hindered horseback riding, but she didn’t protest. She simply put on the robe and turned to the still-yawning Huzhu with a serious expression.
“Snake Lord informed me that they’ve discovered traces of an undead creature in Chang’an City. We don’t know how many undead bones that thing has scattered. We need to find it as soon as possible.”
Huzhu sighed, arms crossed. “Alright, I understand. I’ll find out who’s been unusually unlucky lately.”
Those carrying undead bones were particularly unlucky. Most people attributed their misfortune to mere chance without realizing it was the residue left by these undead bones. Huzhu was knowledgeable in such matters, making her the perfect investigator.
After sorting out their task, Huzhu turned to Wu Zhen and asked, “What happened to you today? How did you end up like this? And you couldn’t even retrieve your clothes?”
Wu Zhen replied, “The clothes are still under the eldest son of the Mei family’s bed.”
Huzhu’s eyes sparkled. “Oh? Is that the young man you mentioned last night, the one who wants to marry you?”
Wu Zhen waved her hand dismissively. “Let’s not discuss this.”
Huzhu was very curious, but seeing Wu Zhen’s resolute expression, she realized she wouldn’t divulge anything. Feeling sympathy for her, Huzhu suggested, “Should we head to Chang’an City tonight to investigate?”
Wu Zhen replied firmly, “You go with Quack. I have to go to the eldest son of the Mei family. He possesses an undead bone that I need to retrieve.”
The young man had one undead bone on him, and she had accidentally dropped another one under his bed. If left unattended, he might perish in his room that very night.
Huzhu started to say, “But the eldest son of the Mei family…”
Wu Zhen shot her a glance, and Huzhu fell silent with frustration.
“Alright, you focus on finding the remaining undead bones quickly. I’ll head off now.” Before visiting the eldest son of the Mei family, Wu Zhen needed to stop by home for dinner with her elderly father.
Wu Zhen still descended from the second-floor window. Huzhu heard a curse from outside; it seemed the cat hadn’t worn a robe in a long time, and the hem of her skirt had caught on a branch, nearly causing her to fall.
Upon returning to Duke Yu’s Mansion, Wu Zhen was surprised to find her father sitting in the hall with a broad smile on his face.
“Why are you so happy? What’s going on?” She asked.
Duke Yu stroked his beard and gestured for her to come closer. “Come, let me show you something.”
Wu Zhen followed her enigmatic father to the backyard and found a wild goose in a wooden cage. Duke Yu pointed at the bird and said, “The matchmaker brought this wild goose today, which was actually hunted by the eldest son of the Mei family. He took special leave to hunt it outside the city just to propose to you. Such dedication is rare! Since he’s so sincere, I believe you’ll have a wonderful life together.”
Wu Zhen hesitated. “Isn’t this moving too fast?”
Duke Yu snorted. “If we don’t act quickly, we might miss the opportunity.”
