Demon King's Repayment - chapter 3
In this barren little village, most of the old people who had toiled for their whole life were full of wrinkles in their faces and had crooked backs. Those who could walk around in clothes without patches were already part of the rare wealthy families in the village.
Yet suddenly, on the muddy road of the ridge, an old man with such beautiful clothes and rich face appeared. The sisters around her didn’t react to such abrupt appearance. Yuan Xiang knew in her heart that this must be a special existence that only she could see.
Having lived in this world for six or seven years, she knew that there was a big difference between fairies and ghosts. The little foxes and little flower fairies in the village, which usually mixed in with the crowd, could not really harm humans except for occasional pranks. As a young person from modern society who could accept new things, she was not afraid to come into contact with those little strange creatures.
But the old man, who walked over at the moment, would not only take a leisurely stroll in the village where humans lived in the noon, but also perfectly transform his appearance into a human form. He was a “big demon” that she couldn’t provoke casually.
So Yuan Xiang took the second sister, Yuan Zhaodi’s hand, pretended to be innocent, as if she didn’t see the old man just like her sisters.
The distance between the two was getting closer and closer. She got a little nervous. She tried to pull her gaze to a place far away, turning a blind eye to the old man who was close at hand, but her palms began to sweat slightly.
When she passed by, the old man suddenly bent over with his smiling face in front of her.
“Little girl, you can see the old man, right?”
Yuan Xiang’s face instantly turned pale and her body tightened.
“Xiang’er, what are you doing? Catch up with us.” The second sister exclaimed, dissatisfied.
Yuan Xiang could not speak. She didn’t know what kind of reaction she should make. The person might just want to swindle her, but he didn’t hold back at that moment. It could be regarded as showing off.
If this “old man” wanted to do something to her and her siblings, she would be completely helpless and defenseless.
She could only shut her mouth, follow her sister stiffly, and continued to pass by the old man nervously.
“I’m so hungry, sister. What do we have for lunch? Let’s make clam soup with the ones we fished.” Yuan Zhaodi was still thinking about lunch.
“I know that you are greedy but we have to keep them in a water tank and wash the mud. Wait until evening for Mom and Dad to come back from the field before eating.” The eldest sister Yuan Chunhua replied.
The two sisters were unaware of the crisis around them as they talked to each other with ease and walked past the corner of the old man’s clothes.
Fortunately, the person didn’t seem to have any plans to embarrass them. He smiled and avoided them, letting them leave easily.
The sun was shining brightly yet Yuan Xiang was having cold sweats.
The old man looked at Yuan Xiang’s figure which was slowly walking away, twisted his beard and nodded. “Sure enough, a good quality child. At a young age, not only can she see spirits, but she can also remain calm like this. No wonder Mr. Xiangzhi came for her.”
“Huh, calm. I saw her legs shaking in shock and she’s smaller than a rabbit spirit. She’s not even enough to stuff my teeth.” A strange voice came from somewhere underground.
“She is only six or seven years old. Even for a human being, she’s just a cub. How can she compare with an old demon like you who had lived for six or seven hundred years.” The old man said with a smile.
The sky was gorgeous at sunset and the shards of scale clouds were stained by the afterglow of the setting sun, just like a boating sea of clouds into the mortal world. It was rare for the Yuan family to have guests. The parents waited in the front hall and the sisters were busy boiling water and cooking. Yuan Xiang alone chopped wood in the yard.
She was holding a sharp axe, standing in front of a splitting block with a black face as she whispered to the empty wooden stake.
“Step aside.”
In her sight, there was a chicken paralyzed on the short pier at the moment. To be precise, a long-necked chicken in clothes.
It was neatly dressed in a small gray robe and its hands were properly caged in the sleeves, but a thin and long chicken neck stuck out from the collar. This nondescript little demon put his neck on a wooden block like a guillotine, fiercely pretending to be courageous.
Yuan Xiang knew that if she cut it down with an axe, the little chicken’s head would fall to the ground, roll in circles in the dusty ground, and then automatically connect back to the broken chicken neck. So it lay down without hesitation again.
This long-necked demon had this weird hobby. He always liked to lie on the pier where people chop wood and play this kind of beheading game over and over again.
Yuan Xiang, who could see it, didn’t want to play this game with it.
“Go away, I’m going to chop wood.” Yuan Xiang said.
On the little chicken’s head, there were two disproportionately sluggish eyes. One eye was up and the other was down. Both eyes turned around, avoiding Yuan Xiang’s sight, begging for nothing. It lay on the “guillotine” and refused to move.
“If you don’t leave, I will burn you as firewood.” Yuan Xiang was angry.
At that time, the eldest sister Yuan Chunhua’s voice came from behind. “Xiang’er, are you talking to yourself again?”
Yuan Xiang was startled, turned around in a hurry and scratched her head embarrassedly.
