Demon King's Repayment - Chapter 1
In the south of Yuanjia Village, surrounded by singing birds and cicadas and the fragrance of lotus flowers, was a clear stream, the sacred place for the village children.
The village kids were unlike the young ladies in towns. For them, playing in the cool stream and touching mud snails and hogweed were the most pleasant times of the day in summer.
After all, when they return home, they have to help their parents feed the chickens, chop wood, and do a lot of work. The older ones even needed to cook food for the whole family while they waited for their parents to return from the field after a whole day’s hard work.
Yuan Xiang shook the basket on her back and whisked the water off it. The basket was almost as tall as her and it was filled with hogweed that she had just picked up from the stream. She adjusted her breathing and tried to keep up with her sisters. At a tender age of seven, she had been used for labor all day and had lost the time to play.
After an car accident, she, a writer, suddenly transmigrated from the bustling modern society to this barren medieval period. But in any case, after seven years, she had gradually adapted to the rural life without electronic products and access to information and also got dominated by manual labor.
There had just been a thunderstorm earlier in the morning so the bumpy dirt road had a lot of water pits after the rain.
The children were barefoot as they frolicked and walked past puddles of various sizes. No one noticed that there was a small humanoid creature which struggled desperately in a small puddle just beside their feet.
It was too small that it was not even as tall as a child. With thin limbs and fair skin, the appearance was no different from human beings except for the pair of film-like wings added on its back.
The pair of wings was soaked by rainwater and they sunk to the bottom of the puddle, making it more difficult for the little one to break free. It could only throw a small arm out of the water and thump continuously, with a look of horror.
However, the children passing by were unable to see the dying creature in the puddle. They still laughed and trampled on the muddy water as they were passing by.
Yuan Xiang, who was following at the end of the team, suddenly stopped.
She looked at her elder sisters who were ahead yet didn’t notice anything. She squatted down calmly, stretched out a finger to fish out the little man in the puddle, and placed it on an open sunflower by the road.
The drowning villain was rescued. In panic, it used all its limbs together and grabbed Yuan Xiang’s fingers tightly. It took Yuan Xiang little effort to get it down and hang it on the sunflower.
The little man slumped on the soft yellow petals, a very tired expression across his small face. His facial features were wrinkled together. He folded his two small hands and raised them to bow to Yuan Xiang then spat out some water bubbles.
It was kind of cute.
Yuan Xiang had a little smile.
Maybe it was because of a death. After she transmigrated, she found out that she had a unique ability which allowed her to clearly see the various spirits and fairies living in this world.
But out of caution, Yuan Xiang never told it to her relatives. She was in a village where people’s wisdom had not been fully civilized. They worshipped gods and feared ghosts. Their inability to protect themselves and her peculiar ability could easily make the heretics go against her.
As for whether anyone else in this world could see all kinds of demons like her, she didn’t know. After she was born, she never had a chance to take a step out of the village and see the outside world. She only knew that, in Yuanjia Village with a small population, there was no one with an ability like her.
Whether it was her parents or the goddess in the village who could summon all kinds of big immortals, no one else could see the special existence in the wild and forest nor could they feel the little spirits that were mixing around with everyone.
The eldest sister, Yuan Chunhua, who was leading in front, stopped and looked back at the little sister who was far behind. Her younger sister, who was less than seven years old, was smiling at a sunflower by the side of the road. She sighed helplessly.
Among the three sisters in the family, the second sister had the kind of sneaky and slippery character. She was diligent and calm, but often liked to talk to herself or giggled by herself.
The twelve-year-old Yuan Chunhua was like a half mother in front of these younger siblings. She patted her younger brother, walked back, and placed two wet hogweeds from the little sister’s basket into the already full one in her hands which reduced the burden on the younger sister.
“Xiang’er don’t play anymore, let’s go home soon. The sun is setting and the road is bad.”
Their parents were ordinary farmers, guarding a few acres of dry land. In addition to an old mother who was still lingering and sick, there was also a child waiting to be fed. Life was very hard.
The eldest girl was born in the winter, so she was named Yuan Chunhua (Chun: Spring, hua: flower) forcibly in order for it to be a good omen. Flower (girl) would bloom first and then bear fruit (boy). It was a pity that heaven did not give what they wanted. No fruit was born, but the flowers bloomed one after another.
When the second child who popped out of the mother’s belly was still a girl, Grandma Yuan’s expression was already ugly, so her name was plainly decided as Yuan Zhaodi.
And as the third money-squandering goods (daughter) born in the family, Yuan Xiang was destined to be an existence that disappointed everyone.
