Blissful Days After Widowhood - Chapter 512
Knowing that Gu Yin was alright and still had the strength to drink soup, Wu Qingyi and the others went to see the baby swaddled in a blanket.
When the little one made her entrance into the world with a loud cry, she stopped crying after being picked up and cleaned.
Newborns were never particularly attractive; their skin was a bit red and wrinkled. Born at nine months, not premature, but not too large, she resembled a little kitten.
She blinked her eyes for a moment and refused to open them again. Closing her eyes, she hummed softly, appearing incredibly cute.
Wu Zhong heard that the delivery had concluded, and he rushed over. The entire family couldn’t take their eyes off her, but no one dared to touch her; they could only admire her with their eyes.
After a while, the delivery room was tidied up, and Wu Qingyi and the old doctor entered first.
The old doctor checked Gu Yin’s pulse, applied acupuncture, and confirmed that she was in good condition. It was now Wu Qingyi’s turn to sit by the bed and talk to her.
Gu Yin had already enjoyed the pig’s trotter soup. The soup, boiled until it turned white, with all the excess fat skimmed off, looked very refreshing.
The maid gently untangled Gu Yin’s hair, which was damp with cold sweat. They used a handkerchief to wipe her forehead, and then Wu Qingyi assumed Song Shiliu’s role, holding a spoon and a small bowl to feed her soup.
He hadn’t said anything throughout, but later, when Gu Yin touched the palm of his hand, she noticed the cold sweat in his hands.
“Everything is really fine, it was a smooth delivery, just two or three hours in total. That’s considered quite fast,” Gu Yin comforted, squeezing his fingers.
Although her complexion still carried a hint of paleness, her eyes were as bright as ever, radiating vitality. Only then did Wu Qingyi release a long breath, tightly gripping her weak hand and whispering, “As long as you’re okay.”
After a short rest, while Gu Yin still had some energy, she allowed Gu Ye and Wu’an to enter.
Although the delivery room had been cleaned and scented, without the option to open windows for ventilation, the smell was not pleasant.
The two kids didn’t mind at all, entering one after the other, quicker than the other.
“Sister-in-law is fine, so I can relax now,” Wu’an said.
Gu Ye first reached out and touched Gu Yin’s palm and forehead, ensuring the temperature was normal. Then he spoke, “I always said it was a little sister. You said there’s no certainty about these things, but look, she’s here now.”
Gu Yin burst into laughter, and shortly after, Mrs. Wang came over with the swaddled baby.
The little girl was still making soft sounds, just fed by the wet nurse. Mrs. Wang placed her next to Gu Yin. Her humming softened a bit, but she still wrinkled her small eyebrows, looking slightly displeased.
Mrs. Wang said that she was already very calm, even mentioning that when she gave birth to Wu Qingyi in the past, he cried for a whole hour, exhausting himself before finally falling asleep.
“Youngest sister is so obedient, and so pretty. How can there be such a well-behaved child?” Gu Ye said, placing the jade flute he had been holding in his hand to his lips and playing a tune.
As if understanding the melody, the little girl immediately quieted down, her mouth pouting, entering dreamland.
Gu Ye was delighted to be so close to his sister right after she was born.
It was time to give the baby a name. The formal name, decided by Wu Qingyi and Gu Yin earlier, was Yuyao, meaning beautiful jade.
The nickname had not been decided yet, and Gu Yin left that choice to the others in the family.
Mrs. Wang suggested, “My daughter-in-law is skilled in cooking. How about a nickname related to food?”
Gu Yin naturally agreed. Naming children after food was a popular trend in her time, with names like Little Strawberry, Little Pudding, and Little Bean Bun being quite cute.
Encouraged by this, Mrs. Wang continued, “My daughter-in-law wanted pig’s trotter soup right after giving birth. How about calling her Little…”
Who would name their daughter Little Pig Trotter? Gu Ye quickly reached out to cover her mouth, finally stopping her from continuing.
“How about Xiao Yudi?” Gu Ye suggested tentatively.
His sister often listened to him playing the flute even while she was in the womb and loved it after birth.
She didn’t cry often, but she would hum like a kitten. However, whenever Gu Ye played the jade flute or placed it in her small hands, she became much more obedient.
Compared to Little Pig Trotter, Xiao Yudi received support from everyone in the family except Mrs. Wang.
On the third day of Xiao Yudi’s birth, a lively but not extravagant ceremony was held in Duke Ying’s Mansion.
People from the palace also attended, with Empress Zhou representing the royal family. Prince Lu Xuan also came to see his elder brother’s newborn sister.
However, to Lu Xuan’s disappointment, his big brother’s newborn sister, who was obedient and beautiful in his big brother’s mouth, with a rosy face, small size, and humming sounds, looked more like a little pet than a baby. She didn’t have the adorable charm he imagined.
Lu Xu had been studying for almost two years now and understood a lot of things.Â
So he didn’t say that Xiao Yudi was not good; he knew that his older brother would definitely get angry if he did.
But he was young and open-hearted, with no hidden agenda; whatever he was thinking was written all over his face.
When Gu Ye saw Xiao Yudi, his disappointed expression couldn’t deceive him.
If it were someone else revealing such a look towards his precious sister, Gu Ye would have been displeased long ago.
But Lu Xu, having lived, eaten, and studied together with him for so long, and being half-brothers with the same father, Gu Ye had already considered him part of the family.
He didn’t hold a grudge against Lu Xu and just explained to him, “My nanny says that children are not very good-looking when they are born, but they get better as they grow older. Look at my sister Xiao Yudi, her features are just like my mother’s, and overall she resembles my uncle. She will definitely be very good-looking in the future.”
Lu Xu still believed his older brother’s words, but the unattractive appearance of the child in front of him was undeniable. He couldn’t see any resemblance and said skeptically, “So that’s how it is.”
Gu Ye knew that he still didn’t quite believe it, so he didn’t say much more.
The days passed slowly like flowing water, and soon Xiao Yudi turned one year old.
Another April came, and at the first birthday celebration, Lu Xu saw Xiao Yudi again.
She was chubby, wearing a bright red short robe, with short black hair tied into two small braids on top of her head. Her skin was white and tender, as if she had grown up soaking in milk. As Gu Ye had described, her features were like Gu Yin’s—slender eyebrows, large grape-like eyes—and overall, she resembled her father with distinct facial contours.
On her small face, not yet the size of a palm, she looked very serious, and her chubby little hands were struggling to solve a nine-ring puzzle.
In short, she was even more adorable and pleasing than the Fuwa dolls in the New Year paintings!
